Trivia
I See the Stars Are Here With Me
No-Shit Novak, the proprietor of the Noodle Shop on Delaney Station, was known as a hard-ass but if he ever saw a kid on the station in need of food, he fed them no matter what. Heck was one of those kids, and befriended his daughter Cat. Heck even basically lived at the shop for a time, and often fixed the Noodle Shop as a way to repay No-Shit's kindness. His relationship with his daughter was another matter entirely, and became increasingly more complicated as she grew up. When Cat was brought home by a Ranger, after nearly leaving the station with Heck on a stolen ship, No-Shit was disappointed, but advised her not to get caught like that again. This in turn disappointed Cat - she soon stopped expecting him to be better than he was.
As his daughter Cat won scholarships to attend Greater Ganymede University, she knew she wanted to take Heck with her. No-Shit warned her against it, as he saw Heck had a bright future ahead of her as a shipbreaker. Cat left without saying anything to Heck, which broke both their hearts. Heck attempted to move on, still fixing the boilers at the Noodle Shop whenever No-Shit needed it.
When Cat returned from Greater Ganymede University, the two girls did not speak to each other at all. Their stalemate over the next few years was hard for No-Shit to watch. His death from myelitis was ultimately the event that caused them to exchange tentative words with each other again. Unbeknownst to Cat and Heck, No-Shit set a trap for them. Hoping they would raid his liquor safe after he passed, he armed an automatic trigger to seal them into the room for six hours. His moonshot from beyond the grave was that they would either kiss and make up or kill each other within that time.
They Will See Us for Miles
While No-Shit does not show up in the episode, he is discussed. It is revealed that No-Shit hired a dogwalker to find Heck's birth certificate and other important papers. This is seemingly the only way anyone on the station ever knew her birth name. It is also revealed that he and his former partner, Charlotte, met because of their respective addictions to substances. He was very open about his past with Cat, and had been recovered for 20 years by the time of his death. He also apparently handled the substances better than Charlotte did.
